Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Action films are known for their high-energy content, intense sequences, and portrayal of extreme situations that often involve risky behavior. These films can influence viewers, particularly adolescents, by portraying daring actions and decisions that may shape their perception of risk and reward (Olumide & Atiku, 2023). In Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State, a region with a diverse youth population, the consumption of action films may influence risk-taking behaviors, including dangerous driving, substance use, and other forms of reckless behavior.

This study aims to explore how exposure to action films affects the risk-taking behaviors of adolescents in Shendam, assessing whether these films serve as a form of social influence.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Adolescents are in a critical phase of development, often susceptible to peer influence and media content. With the popularity of action films among youths, it is important to understand whether these films contribute to an increase in risk-taking behavior. This study will focus on how these films impact adolescents' decisions, particularly those related to their personal safety and health.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the correlation between exposure to action films and risk-taking behavior among adolescents in Shendam.
  2. To assess the types of risky behaviors influenced by action films in this demographic.
  3. To explore adolescents' perceptions of risk and safety as shaped by action films.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does exposure to action films influence adolescents' risk-taking behaviors in Shendam Local Government Area?
  2. What types of risky behaviors are most common among adolescents who frequently watch action films?
  3. How do adolescents perceive the portrayal of risk in action films?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Adolescents who watch action films frequently are more likely to engage in risk-taking behaviors.
  2. Exposure to action films is positively correlated with higher perceptions of risk-taking as an exciting or rewarding activity.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be useful for educators, parents, and policymakers in understanding the impact of media on youth behavior. By identifying potential links between action film exposure and risky behavior, interventions can be developed to mitigate negative influences.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on adolescents in Shendam Local Government Area, Plateau State. Limitations include the subjective nature of self-reported behaviors and the potential for other influential factors (e.g., peer pressure, family dynamics) that may also contribute to risk-taking behaviors.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Action Films: Movies that primarily focus on exciting physical activities such as car chases, fight scenes, and other high-risk scenarios.
  • Risk-Taking Behaviors: Actions that involve a degree of danger or potential harm, such as reckless driving or experimenting with drugs.
  • Adolescents: Individuals between the ages of 13 and 19, a group particularly influenced by media content and peer interactions.
